Travel Soure, Brazil

Soure is the biggest town on the island, but still has fewer cars than Salvaterra and is less isolated than Joanes. Here you can bike or walk 3km to Praia Barra Velho and if you continue past this beach and there is a boat to take you across the river you will be rewarded when you reach Praia de Araruna – the most beautiful beach, which is practically deserted. Praia do Pesqueiro is another beautiful beach option.

Beware of stingrays on all three of Soure’s beaches. Swimming is not recommended, but if you feel like you must take a dip, go in where other people have recently been – hopefully the stingrays will have been already scared away. Also always remember the stingray shuffle – shuffle you feet in the sand as you walk, instead of picking them up, this way you will disturb any stingrays before you step on them.

Where to Stay:

Hotel Araruna; s/d R$40/50, clean and simple rooms, great deal
Pousada O Canto do Frances; R$65-80, nice, clean place, removed from the center of town but it rents bikes
Hotel Ilha do Marajó; s/d R$130/160, clean rooms, swimming pool, far from the center – you will want a bike
