Travel Ilhabela, Brazil

Most of the island is a park and Unesco-protected biosphere. Within its volcanic peaks and white sand beaches, a dense jungle hides over 360 waterfalls. It is a lovely island (its name means ‘Beautiful Island’) that offers beach lounging, jungle hikes, and windsurfing.

The population shifts drastically between the high and low seasons. During summer the beaches are packed with vacationing Paulistas. During the summer bloodsucking mosquitoes – borrachudos - are very active. So be sure to use plenty of repellent.

Make sure to visit Cachoeira das Tocas where there area some small waterfalls with deep pools and water slides.

For good beaches head to Praia Jabaquara which is on the north, and more sheltered, side of the island (accessed by a 5kn trail) and Praia dos Castelhanos – good for surfing and camping.

Where to Stay:

Reservations are a good idea on weekends and necessary on summer weekends. Prices on the island are high, and some people would rather stay in São Sebastião and take day trips to the island.

PousadaCaravela; ste R$140, good value, suites have kitchen and balconies

Ilhabela Ferry and Bus Routes:

Ilhabela to São Sebastião by ferry; cars weekday/weekend R$11/16, motorbikes weekday/weekend R$5/8, those of you on foot are free!

When you are ready to get moving again head back to São Sebastião and catch a bus to Paraty.
