Travel São Luís, Brazil

São Luís has a rich history, which you can see in the many museums and cultural sites. Most of the historic city center has been refurbished and 1100 of the colonial homes have been put on the UNESCO world heritage list. São Luís also has the third largest Afro-Brazilian population and is the reggae capital of Brazil. All of this has created a colorful atmosphere and a lively beach scene, all of which is pulled together for Bumba Meu Boi – a festival derived from African, Indian, and Portuguese influences.

There are many museums and old colonial-era houses to visit in São Luís, but I recommend visiting Avenida Dom Pedro II; a long plaza lined with important historical buildings such as the governor’s mansion and a French fort. You may also want to check out Cafua das Mercés, a windowless building that was once a slave market and now houses slavery exhibits and wood-carved statues from West Africa.

The city beaches can be fun but busy, and you should beware of strong tides and pollution in some areas. Praia Ponta d’Areia is the city’s principal beach and is very busy. Two Kilometers down the road is Praia São Marcos which popular with the younger crowd and frequented by surfers. Praia Araçagi, about 20km away, is also a good surfing beach. Praia de Calhau is the best of the city beaches and caters to late-night partiers.
