Travel São Paulo, Brazil

São Paulo is Brazil’s international hub - and a good jumping off point. Dozens of airlines have direct international service to Guarulhos International Airport (GRU). There is also direct bus service from São Paulo into neighboring countries.

Many people are overwhelmed by São Paulo. It isn’t a particularly beautiful city and it is tough city for the traveler to master and enjoy. Staying here for anything other than a stop-over may seem like too much work, but exploring the city does hold its perks: São Paulo is home to Brazil’s rich and powerful, it is the most culturally diverse area in Brazil - and home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, and it is the commercial, industrial, and financial capital of Brazil.

If you want to take the time to get to know São Paulo, you will no doubt love it. But most people like to get away from the big city. To do so you can head north towards Rio de Janeiro or take a side trip to Iguaçu Falls along the Argentine boarder.

Where to Stay:

Hotel Rivoli: s/d R$36/47, backpacker favorite with cheap private rooms, near Praca da Republica and the metro
Akasaka: s/d R$69/79, good value, impeccable but no-frills rooms, located across from the metro
Pousada dos Franceses: s/d R$ 45/65, on a quite side street a short walk from Avenida Paulista, generally nice place

Ready to leave the big city?
